Getting Up Is A Choice
By Zig Ziglar
Virtually all of us have experienced the phenomenon of watching
a movie and laughing and, on occasion, even crying. The tears and laughter were
not brought about because somebody put something in the theater seats, but
rather by something shown on the screen which entered your mind, affected your
emotions and produced the tears or laughter.
The exciting thing is that there is something you can do about
your emotions, whether you are “up” or “down,” and the choice is yours. Most
people who are “up” don’t want to do anything to get “down,” but, surprisingly
enough, according to a study done at Ohio State University, everyone who is
“down,” does not necessarily want to get “up.” Maybe there is some truth in the
old saw that “misery loves company,” or that some people enjoy having “pity
parties.” At least they seem unwilling to take positive actions to cure the
“doom and gloom” feeling which they have.
The question is, why would some people elect not to change their
gloomy state of mind? A follow-up study revealed the answer to that question.
It has to do with self-esteem. Those who felt good about themselves even when
they were in a foul mood felt they deserved to feel better and took positive
action to accomplish that objective. Those with poor self-esteem had a tendency
to maintain that foul mood by pursuing their negative thinking, which produced
the feeling.
One fast cure for overcoming gloomy feelings is offered by the
Menninger Clinic in Topeka, Kansas. Many years ago, Dr. Karl Menninger stated
that when we are down, if we will seek out someone else who has a problem and
get involved in helping them solve theirs, we quickly forget our own. So the
solution is simple. When you’re in a blue mood, help someone else solve their
problem. Both of you will feel better, which means I can see both of you AT THE
TOP!
Zig Ziglar is
known as America’s motivator. He is the author of 30 books . Check out his
latest book, Born to Win.

Get Organized! - A Key To Success In Your Classes
Some experts say the difference
between good students and poor students isn't mainly ability. Instead, it's how
students organize themselves to use their abilities. A little organization can
produce amazing results!
ü Have a homework agenda or
notepad to keep track of your assignments, and always carry it.
ü Ask the teacher for some outside
help when the classroom explanation is not adequate for you.
ü Use folders to put your notes
in, and keep them organized.
ü Have phone numbers for
classmates, especially of one who will be your "homework buddy". This
is someone in your class who collects hand-outs and assignments for you when
you are absent from school. You can borrow your buddy's notes when you return
to school, and you can do the same for this friend.
ü Ask questions when you are unsure
of something.
ü Pay attention in class as it is
very easy to let your mind wander. Take notes, concentrate on what is being
said; it will be easier to absorb the information being presented.
ü Keep your bookshelf, desk, and
bookbag neat.
ü Be prepared for each class,
bringing the materials you need to class (including pencil, pen, paper,
highlighter, textbooks, homework, etc.).
ü Create a good study space with
little distractions, that is, a place that is fairly quiet and away from the
major traffic in your home. Sometimes music can be relaxing, but TV is a
distraction.
ü Do difficult homework when you
are mentally and physically at your best, not late at night, or when you are
hungry.
ü Hang a calendar over your study
area, and pay attention to it when you mark down tests, projects and
assignments. That way, you can see what you have to do at a glance. You can
plan ahead.
ü Stick to a study schedule; set
aside an hour every shool evening for homework and review of notes.
ü Prepare well so you can feel
relaxed.
ü Read the whole test first so you
can plan your time.
ü Outline an essay answer before
you begin to write.
ü Answer all the questions you know
the answers to first, and mark the questions that you want to return to.
ü Go over all returned tests to
learn from your mistakes.
ü If you think that
you can't succeed, or if you allow past failures and mistakes to keep you from
trying, you'll never get anywhere. In order for you to get good grades, you have to believe in yourself and in your abilities. Think positively, be confident, and tell yourself you can do it!
